All processing of retiring Miami-Dade County Public Schools employees is completed by this office. Retirement counselors are available to meet with and provide estimates of benefits to employees planning to retire or join the Deferred Retirement Option Program (DROP). Requests for audit are submitted through this office to the Division of Retirement to obtain the cost of purchasing leaves of absence, military service, refunded service, etc. The office is notified of employees who die and families of deceased employees are counseled regarding survivor's benefits. Disability retirements are processed for employees with at least 8 years of service when two Florida licensed physicians will certify that the employee is totally and permanently disabled. Board-approved leaves without pay (personal, parental, professional, illness of self or relative, military) are processed for documented unpaid absences which will exceed 30 working days. Temporary military leave and supplemental military leave payments are also processed by this office. Additionally, this office administers the implementation of the provisions of the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993. This office is notified of all claims filed with the State of Florida, Agency for Workforce Innovation, by Miami-Dade County Public Schools' current or former employees, and advises the local claims office of the reason the employee is unemployed in order that a determination of eligibility may be made. An administrator represents the district at appeal hearings which are held whenever the school system or the employee appeals an unfavorable determination.
