"The first wealth is health." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson

In the 1984-85 school year, the M-DCPS Board piloted the Wellness Program in the Human Resources Office (formerly the Bureau of Personnel Management and Services). Since the inception of the Wellness Program, wellness activities have been organized around six dimensions of lifestyle and health practices. They include weight control, nutrition, heart health, cancer control, exercise, and stress management. The program continues to engage, whenever possible, the services of established non-profit community agencies, such as the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, and the American Lung Association, to name a few.

Wellness is the ability to take responsibility for your own health by learning how to stay healthy, practicing good health habits, and responding to your body's warning signs. In essence, Wellness involves the health of the whole person. Today, most Americans die from heart disease, cancer, stroke and accidents. Many deaths can be prevented by changes in lifestyle and health habits.

Knowing that wellness is a balance between all aspects of life: body, mind, and spirit; and that balance is influenced by heredity, environment, and lifestyle, the information and activities provided by the Wellness Program will continue to assist all of M-DCPS employees in choosing positive health practices while developing and maintaining positive changes in their lifestyles.

Strategies for promoting wellness include the following:

Adults Jogging
Nutritious Foods
Patient & Nurse
Crossroads Sign
Girl Exercising
Boy Exercising
